Do you think the g2 sm, 6000, and crux ar are all in the same temp range? Or is the acrux more of a 4000 kind of boot?

I saw the early Arcteryx prototype boots and was able to offer my ideas to the design effort. I have not seen the finished product and can't offer an opinion at the moment. Nice to have another player in cold weather boots. My impression from what I have seen is they have some growing to do. I would buy the new Scarpa or La Sportiva boot without hesitation. I have long been an advocate of a super light weight double. I've discussed both projects with La Sportiva and Arcteryx. Neither have hit a home run IMO.

You seem to have some objections to the G2 SM Dane, could you please be more specific? Anything else than the boa closing system? There is very little information online about this boot, from the little I've seen it looks very promising, but if there's something not so great that would be good to know.

The spiral zipper of the new 6000 looks very delicate to me, if it breaks it must be almost impossible to repair in the field.

Any thougts on how these two new boots compare?

I've not seen either boot in person. My apologies if I seem to be dissing the G2. I wasn't. My remark was directed to the current design effort. (Scarpa, Arcteryx and La Sportiva) I was hoping for a really light weight double boot based on the Batura or Phantom 6000. The G2 looks from first impression to be a replacement for the Spantik or Baruntse. Which makes it heavier/warmer than most of us will ever need.

The really light weight technical double boot..which I think has the biggest market appeal world wide, has yet to be developed IMO.

I agree, Dane. A very lightweight, technical double boot is exactly what I want. That said, my Phantom 6000's hike and climb well enough for now.

I'm with ya on the 6000. Although I use a different inner boot than standard. Easy to see the potential of a marriage between the Batura and 6000 technology in my mind.

I've gave my spiel for THAT boot to all three of the major players several seasons ago. Might be time to write a blog about a new lwt design effort.

Any idea when the release date is for these? G2 SM's will be tempting in the interim...

Dane said...

Sorry Kendall I really don't know. But if I were to guess, I'd expect both boots to be available in a similar time frame...late Winter early Spring this year?

I've poked around a bit online searching for a release date and the only info I've gotten was second hand. A Backcountry.com customer service rep said they'd be up on their site in April 2016 (as per their Scarpa rep). That was as of mid-Nov.

The new phantoms are up on Scarpa's website (as of 12 Jan. 2016 @ 1324)

Dane I think you just got your wish with La Sportiva G5 boots. Light weight double boot as a hybrid of Bature 2.0 and G2SM. http://www.mountainblog.eu/product/la-sportiva-g5-summer-2017/

Looks like the G5 will be a single supergaiter, not a proper double. But also going to be cheaper than the baturas...

Review and comments here else where but the G2 is a proper double with a supergator built in as well. More akin to the 6000.
