Cold Thistle Hammers

They are done, they are shipping and they are one generation better!  No dicking around on the fit.  Simply bolt them on with the current Petzl picks.  A new stronger and more durable design.  Designed to fit perfectly on the old or new tools. This hammer will fit the current Petzl picks with cut outs and the current or old Nomic heads as well as the current Quark or Ergo.

Please NOTE!   January 4, 2013..... We are now shipping hammers again.  The stock won't last for ever.  I have sold out every production run in the last 3 years in just weeks.   If there is another run it will be Oct. of 2013.  No additional shipping charges  for International orders!

*unavailable currently*

Seen on some of the most experienced Petzl tools in the world. And much more still to come this season.   A truly classic and well tested design worthy of the Nomic.

Summit ice slopes, N. Face of the Eiger and CT hammers.

This was in answer to the new Petzl hammer question from another forum.

"I have cut down the larger, current production, Petzl Nomic hammer, which is virtually what Petzl is doing for the LWT version from what I can tell by the drawings. The CT hammer isn't much of a hammer for pounding on things. The newest Petzl one even worse I suspect from my earlier efforts last year with the Petzl hammer. The bigger production hammer makes the Nomic unbalanced imo which is why there is a CT hammer. The Petzl LWT version will solve the balance problem but not be much of a hammer. For many a little "head protection" is all that will be required.

If that is all you require yes, the newest LWT Petzl "hammer" or cutting down the bigger Petzl production hammer will solve your problem I suspect.

But to be clear, the profile of the Petzl LWT version and Cold Thistle version are not similar in head coverage, head protection or hammer profile. Let alone their respective abilities as actual hammers.

What Petzl's hammers (any version) won't do is make it easy to change picks in the field.....ask those that have tried. Serious design flaw imo."

No issues using them on last year's Quarks, right?
Can't wait to pick them up!

Luc, the hammers are a perfect fit on the Quark.

and I still have hammers available for immediate shipping world wide...

Dane, any chance I can grab a hammer or two from you? Any left?

Sorry, none left and at the momnet no plans to make any more. The Petzl LWT hammer is a good option I think. Not full coverage but good enough to get the job done generally and doesn't spoil the balance of the tool.

Dang... I guess I'll try and find a used one or have the machine shop out back try and cut one. Or maybe I'll fab one up myself... hmm.

Another question for you Dane...Since your the Nomic expert. I used to use BD fusions. I loved em for mixed but disliked them for pure WI. I sold them last spring. I was going to pony up the pennies and buy a pair of X-Dreams after falling in love with them in Ouray. BUT recently I scored an awesome deal I couldn't pass up. I bought a pair of Nomics that were practically new, for 200 bucks. However, I dont know much about the different generations and problems. I want to ensure I have reliable tools this season, so If you could let me know what generation I bought, and what I need to mod or update, that would be awesome. I'll try to link the image...

They are an older pair, said to be purchased in 2008. And have the flame and line pattern on the shafts. Do I need to change the pommels? any other issues with that gen?

Can't tell if the heads have hammer cuts. You can mod the head for the Petzl hammer with little effort. Better and much easier than making your own IMO. And the current production picks will match the hammer and your head. More than half of that battle. You have the original handles and smooth pommel. Same set up I use now after having the new ones and going back to these. You have mixed picks which are a little sticky in ice. Petzl's "ICE" picks (with hammer cuts) might be a little better option for pure ice but your picks are good all around, weights or no weights depending on the quality of your ice.

What you have now is still my personal choice in ice tools. Although the X Dream is a sweet tool as well.

Dane, any plans to make another run of the hammers or adzes?

No plans.

All the stoke & then this... I need hammers, Dane- just got Quarks.

What do you say about milling from hot-rolled SS/CS/Steel Tee bar stock? Say 1"x1"x1/8" or 3/16?" What grade would you get?

If you have the newest tools Nomic or Quark, t stock will eventually break because it isn't supported by the V cut on the head. Buy the mini petzel version.
